When You Know You're Ready to Sell
After a divorce, it's common to have certain pieces of jewelry you know you will never wear again. Whether you decide to redesign or sell these pieces, there are several options on how to move forward.
Recently, a Trust & Estates Attorney asked me to help one of his clients with such a project. She had a beautiful Columbian emerald and diamond ring and a classic pair of princess-cut diamond stud earrings.
Though she had receipts for both items, she did not have a gemological report, which is the best way to sell a colored gemstone.
Obtaining the GIA Report
To solve this issue, I removed the center emerald from the ring to have it inspected by the Gemological Institute of America.
Similar to diamonds, colored stones are graded for their type, treatment, geographic origin, and clarity enhancement.
This information is vital when speaking to potential buyers.
It informs them of the stone's characteristics while protecting you as the client, ensuring you know the exact type of gem you own.
After I received the GIA report, I went to several auction houses in New York City to sell the emerald ring.
We received multiple offers and ultimately chose the one that was best for my client.
The stud earrings were picked up almost immediately by a private buyer, who was looking for a classic pair of diamond studs.
Whether you've experienced a divorce or you're just not enjoying certain pieces of jewelry in your collection, I can help you receive top dollar for the pieces you want to sell or transform the pieces into something new to love.
TIP: If you're looking to sell diamonds or precious gemstones, the first step is to obtain a Gemological Report.
