Rubies: July's Prized Birthstone
Symbolic of love, power and youthful energy in Indian jewelry, rubies are loved for their color and hardness; second only to diamonds. Burmese warriors once believed it made them invincible in battle, while Europeans thought that rubies granted health, wisdom and success in love.
Today, the King of Precious Stones, or ruby is considered part of the corundum family and has a hardness of 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the most durable commercial gemstones. It is also the birthstone for July.
Finding a beautiful ruby takes much searching. Some rubies tend to look purple, while others look pink.
To find a true red color is a prize. Below, I share three of my favorite ruby designs over the past years. Please let me know which is your favorite.
"If you want it, I will make it."
A great client of mine loves rubies. In fact, she wanted her engagement ring to be all rubies (but her husband wanted to buy her a diamond engagement ring instead). After a special occasion in the family, she saw the perfect opportunity to get the emerald-cut ruby ring she always imagined.
"Turning vintage Indian jewelry into a contemporary design."
After inheriting a collection of vintage Indian jewelry from her mother, my client had the idea to repurpose the rubies, pink sapphires and diamonds into a unique ring.
"Valentine's day for you every day."
This custom ruby and diamond wedding band was created for a man and his future wife who wanted to feel like they could celebrate Valentine's day every day.
TIP: Diamond's aren't the only durable gemstone. Rubies and sapphires are incredibly durable and can be worn every day (making them a great choice for engagement rings and wedding bands).
What is your favorite gemstone and why? I'd love to know.
