When You're No Longer Loving Your Jewelry

After years of collecting jewelry, my clients often want to meet with me to sell, redesign and repair their items.

Typically, when I'm called in to look at an estate to evaluate the jewelry my clients have inherited, the first step is often to determine the disposition of each piece before deciding what to keep or not. Some items just need a quick repair, while others carry strong emotions.

This happened when I went to visit a client from one of my favorite networking groups, NAPO NY, the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals. The members of this group have encouraged me to tidy my own spaces, and I suggest everyone to do the same.

Between my client, her mother and her father, they have amassed a significant amount of gold and jewelry they wanted to sell.

All together there were seven bags of silver jewelry, two bags of gold jewelry, gold coins, four rings, three pairs of earrings, three watches, two pins, a pendant, a locket, and a tennis bracelet.

A sample of some of the items in that collection is photographed below.

When I met with my clients, I explained the value of each piece to them, and let them decide how they'd like to move forward.

During the evaluation process, I'm often asked: "Is there a resale value for this?"

After providing my expert opinion on gold weight pricing vs. the cost of a finished piece, it is ultimately their decision (as with all of my clients) to determine what they want to do next.

Why do I do this?

My goal is for my client to get as much money from their jewelry as possible in the manner with which they are most comfortable. I pride myself in taking the extra steps necessary to obtain the maximum value of each piece in their collection.

Once I sold all the pieces from my clients collection that they didn't want to keep, they were extremely pleased with the value we received.

Next, we identified additional projects to work on: sizing and redesigning five different rings.

My client had two beautiful rings made by a famous designer that she (the daughter) wasn't able to fully enjoy.

Due to the intricate line feature on both rings, she was unable to find someone to resize them.

A design that goes all around the ring cannot simply be cut into. It has to be sized and redesigned so you do not see where any work was done.

However, I was able to resize the rings for a perfect fit.

She now wears them every day!

While I was evaluating their jewelry, I was also asked to grade the diamonds in hers and her mother's engagement rings. After I determine the value of the diamonds, we will begin redesigning the rings for an upcoming project.

As always, I will make sure my clients know we will only move forward when they feel completely prepared and have decided on an exact design.

All three of those rings to be redesigned are pictured below.

What pieces do you have in your jewelry collection that you're not wearing or enjoying to the fullest extent?

As the price of gold remains competitive, it is still an ideal time to sell and redesign your jewelry.

TIP: To make the most of your jewelry collection, take an honest evaluation of the pieces you don't often wear. This could be a great opportunity to sell, redesign, or resize.
