The Ruby Ring She Always Wanted
A great client of mine loves rubies. In fact, she wanted her engagement ring to be all rubies (but her husband wanted to buy her a diamond engagement ring instead).
Recently, there was a special occasion in the family that she saw as the perfect opportunity to get the emerald-cut ruby ring she always imagined.
I was commissioned to create this bespoke ruby ring containing 16 emerald-cut rubies in a platinum setting.
This special design presented its own set of challenges. My client wanted an eternity band, meaning the gemstones go all around the ring. This has to be custom-made to perfectly fit the wearer's finger, as an eternity ring cannot be sized.
I first showed my client multiple rubies to choose from.
When creating ruby rings for women, we examine various shades of rubies, as the colors can range from a purple-red all the way to a pink-red.
The ideal color is called "pigeon-blood red", which is a pure-red color and a challenge to find, thus commanding the highest prices. This is just one of many factors taken into account when determining what ruby is most valuable.
Once we selected the shades she liked, I had the 16 emerald-cut rubies individually hand-cut for the perfect fit. In total, the ring held over 10 carats of rubies.
Through my extensive network of industry professionals, I knew the experts to turn to for this precise job. Setting gems with the exact amount of pressure required for a specific gem's hardness is a skill that takes years to master, and my task was finding the right setter for this particular ring.
Whether you love rubies like my client, or other birthstone rings, we can work together to create a one-of-a-kind piece for you.
TIP: When creating eternity bands, you always have to keep in mind this type of ring cannot be sized. It must be a perfect fit. Working with a seasoned professional ensures you are able to create the ring you've always wished for.
