Very High Value
I have a client whose husband is a Trusts and Estates attorney who hired me several years ago to appraise one of his client’s estates. His wife contacted me at the beginning of the year and told me that, as the only surviving female relative, she was lucky enough to inherit all of her family’s fine jewelry and wanted to know what everything was worth.
Some of the more interesting pieces were three diamond engagement rings, a diamond brooch, and diamond hanging earrings. One ring she gave to her daughter, one I sold, and the other diamond needed further investigation.
I shopped the diamond brooch and earrings around the jewelry market and got two offers but held off from taking them right away. Two specific dealers contacted me daily, which never happens. This made me think they were making me lower offers, and it turned out I was right.
Through discussions with another gemologist, we decided to slightly re-cut the diamond ring. When the diamond came back from GIA, both the color and clarity were much higher than we originally thought. The value of the diamond was suddenly tripled.
I brought all the jewelry to auction, and lo and behold, the other two pieces were also valued three times higher than the offers I was made. Of course everything sold at auction and my customer was thrilled! This will be part of her retirement.
You never quite know what you have inherited or what you have in your jewelry box, so let me help you evaluate your treasures. Not rushing the process can really pay off in the end.
All the best,
Jane
