Sapphires: September's Peaceful Birthstone
Symbolic of truth, faithfulness, nobility and heaven, sapphires have been loved for their breathtaking color for centuries. They have been worn by royalty and members of the clergy, and were once believed to protect their owners from harm and envy in ancient Greece.
Ancient Persians even believed the earth sat on top of a giant sapphire, which in turn made the sky blue!
Today, the September birthstone is beloved for its hardness and lack of cleavage, which is the tendency to break when struck. Ranking 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphires are a popular choice for daily wear due to their toughness.
Below, I share three of my favorite sapphire designs over the past years. Please let me know which is your favorite.
"Created to match her beautiful blue eyes."
This custom engagement ring was created with diamonds and a ceylon sapphire. My client hired me to match a sapphire to the shade of his future fiancée's eyes. This was all done from a photograph, as they both live in California. Recently, she visited New York and mentioned how much she still loves her ring!
"From an heirloom to a contemporary piece."
This necklace began as an inherited diamond and sapphire ring. My client wanted to transform the heirloom from her grandmother into a contemporary design. Now, every time she wears this custom piece, she can think of her grandmother.
"Inspired by the ocean."
A client of mine loves the colors of the sunset over an ocean. She wanted to create a custom ring that reminded her of this pleasant thought everyday. I sourced multiple sapphires for this design, including one from Montana.
TIP: Sapphires come in all colors of the rainbow, not just blue. Above is an example. When designing a custom piece, keep in mind that I can create anything you desire. Here is an example of a custom multi-colored sapphire ring.
