Creating a Clasp
Transforming emerald diamond earring into clasp
The clasps made for pins and brooches originated from clasps that held clothing together, which date back as far as 25,000 years. Clasps can also lock a necklace in place. Like clothing clasps, they can be displayed and have become elegant. A beautiful clasp can be worn to the side or even the front of a necklace in order to show off its beauty.
My client had a long strand of pearls that she wanted to make into a double strand necklace, and a set of very fancy ear clips that she was not going to wear without updating them. As we discussed how beautiful the ear clips were, I held them up together to examine them, and found myself imagining what it would take to design a custom clasp.
We had no pictures or reference to draw from, which made this a fun and challenging project. We had to figure out how to:
Add a locking mechanism to the back of the earrings (which I designed)
Attach and connect the earrings together
Transform the necklace into a double strand of pearls
And do this in such a way that the whole necklace would lie comfortably on her body.
Once I found the perfect lock, it all came together.
She couldn’t wait to open the box, and once she had it on her neck, we talked about how many different ways she was going to be able to wear it.
TIP: This kind of project requires a seasoned, professional jeweler who understands the mechanics of jewelry design. Contact me if you have an unusual or creative design you need help bringing to life.
I look forward to working with you!
