Choosing the Right Diamond

WOULD YOU CHOOSE A Natural, Lab-Grown, OR INHERITED Diamond?

Lab Grown diamond engagement ring by JB Jewels

Everyone deserves a diamond that they truly love. This is what I tell all of my clients.

While not all of us are lucky enough to inherit a diamond, we all have the option to create our own custom engagement ring.

Recently, a client came to me looking to do just that for his girlfriend. They had been discussing their engagement and spoke about the possibility of using an inherited diamond they already owned. They also were considering a lab-grown diamond.

As a jewelry designer with over 35 years of experience, I was happy to walk them through the differences and help them choose the diamond they would be most happy with.

Here’s a brief recap of what we talked about that might help you to decide on whether a lab-grown diamond or natural diamond is right for you.

NATURAL GROWN Diamonds

  • Natural diamonds have long been loved for their symbolic nature, forming in the earth over millions of years, making them a great engagement ring choice

  • Because natural diamonds are rare and difficult to find, they have a higher resale value than lab-grown diamonds

LAB-GROWN Diamonds

  • Because these are manufactured in a lab by a specialist (rather than forming in nature), they are incredibly high in clarity and color

  • At this point, there really is no resale value for lab-grown diamonds, but who knows how this will change in the future!

After my client and I concluded this conversation, he chose to move forward with a lab-grown diamond rather than their natural inherited diamond.

When we looked at the inherited diamond, it had obvious flaws in it that were apparent to the naked eye. It was slightly chipped and my client just didn’t love it. We even considered matching the inherited diamond with a new stone to make an asymmetrical design, a popular contemporary style at this time. But, after much consideration, they decided to go with a lab-grown diamond instead of using two stones.

I utilized my diverse network of connections to find them the perfect diamond based on the four C’s - cut, color, clarity, and carat. I also worked directly with the manufacturer to source a colorless lab-grown diamond with minimal flaws. As with all diamonds I find for my clients, I provided a gemological report.

Opting for a lab-grown diamond, my clients also spent less money than they would have for the same size in a natural diamond.

My client wanted a large diamond on her hand, and that is exactly what she got!

I pride myself on keeping up to date with everything going on in the jewelry industry. This includes the emergence of any new lab-grown diamonds or gemstones, along with popular trends and styles.
