Behind the Sale: From Estate to Marketplace

Various fine jewelry items sold by JB Jewels

A sampling of the estate that contained over 100 pieces of fine jewelry.

What do you do when you inherit a large sum of jewelry from your family? In many cases, you become the executor or executrix of the estate and end up working with various professionals. I am often called in to help families through this process.

A client of mine recently called me with this exact situation. As always, I told her that I travel to my clients homes or offices. I am happy to provide this service to all of my clients, so they never feel at risk or a liability when traveling with multiple pieces of their fine jewelry.

When I arrived at my client’s house, she had the dining table filled with various pieces of beautiful fine jewelry. Items like antiques, modern pieces, earrings, necklaces, diamonds and gold from three generations of women all lined the table.

Over the course of several hours, I was able to sort through the hundreds of pieces of jewelry and determine what was real from what was costume. This provided my client a better understanding of the value of each piece, and ultimately the potential benefit of selling pieces individually rather than as a group.

During this process I was also searching for any items that contained sapphires, emeralds or diamonds that could be repurposed for another project. In this situation, my client mentioned she wanted to craft seven rings for the seven women in her family with the jewels and metal from various pieces. So, as I evaluated each piece, I also took note of which items had small enough gemstones to pull out for this future project.

Following this meeting, I began showing her fine jewelry items to various buyers, auction houses, and estate buyers. I found multiple offers for my client to consider, and kept an accurate and detailed spreadsheet with each item for ease of reference. As always, I want my client to feel completely knowledgeable, informed, and comfortable throughout the entire process.

Due to the size of the estate, the process took several months. In the end, the wait was worth it. We were able to sell all of the fine jewelry items and source the materials for the seven rings for her seven family members. Stay tuned for the follow up on that project!
