Rethink an Antique
Do you prefer to purchase fine jewelry in the moment or take a few weeks to think it over?
A client of mine was recently searching for a new pair of earrings and found a beautiful antique red garnet pair online. However, she waited too long to make her decision, and when she was finally ready to purchase them, they were gone.
Luckily, she sent me a photo with some thoughts about how we could improve on the initial design and create a unique pair just for her.
First, I consulted my jeweler if it were possible to create such a pair on our own, since the original design was antique. He said yes, and we proceeded with creating the pair.
Then, I sourced the red cabochon garnets that my client initially fell in love with. After that, I went to the model maker to develop a model of the design which was then taken to the caster. That product was taken to the setter to place the stones, and as always, we ended at the polishers for final touches.
Lastly, before I finalized the pair of earrings, I consulted my client again on whether she would like to proceed with the antique look of the original design.
As with some antiques, this pair was oxidized, making the gold look slightly darker and well worn. All fine metals oxidize over time, giving them a patina that darkens the copper and brass that are traditional alloys in gold.
During our consultation, I showed my client the earrings and she immediately fell in love with them.
She didn’t want to change a thing, and so we decided not to add the antique finish.
Ultimately, my client paid less than she would have if she purchased the original pair of earrings online, and received a custom pair that showcased her exact preferences and tastes.
TIP: Working with a fine jewelry expert allows you to create exactly what you want. Whether you start with an abstract concept or a tangible photo, the jeweler’s job is to translate exactly what you’re looking for into a physical piece of jewelry.
