2 Shades of Blue Topaz Hanging Earrings Set in White Gold and Diamonds

As a New Yorker I wear a lot of black. I have an entire drawer in my dresser dedicated to black tops. But I have this one client who has a very different and distinctive style. She loves color more than your average New Yorker. Every time I have met with her she is wearing bold, bright colors. Her uniqueness is apparent from a block away.

She had an idea for a unique pair of blue topaz earrings with two different shades of blue. She wanted them to hang a certain way so they would have some movement, and they had to be light on her ears. So my challenges were first to find her the gemstones in the two colors she wanted, second to custom design a setting that would move and catch the light the way she imagined them but that were, finally, light weight enough for her to wear for long periods of time.

After several email exchanges of photos and ideas we settled on the above design. We made a 3D model out of non-shrink silicone, searched for and found the perfect gemstones in two different shades of blue, and eventually ended up with a beautiful earring that she will be able to wear comfortably for many years to come.

I really enjoyed the challenges of working with this client to create beautiful custom (and comfortable!) jewelry, and I look forward to doing it again with my next client!

Tip: Colored gemstones need to be cleaned properly so that they keep their vibrancy. The oils from your hands can cloud the color and dull them over time. Make sure to have them steamed professionally every now and then - and while you are at it - have them checked to make sure that the settings are secure.
