Creating a Custom Emerald Engagement Ring

A Day In the Life of A New York City Fine Jewelry Designer

After working together for over three years, my assistant Gabby and I finally had the opportunity to meet in person. It was exciting to meet her and her family in New York City. Throughout our time over the years, Gabby had mentioned that she wanted me to design her engagement ring once her boyfriend proposed.

During our time together, she filmed a few moments throughout the day. I wanted to share a peek into my life as a fine jewelry designer in the New York City Diamond District.

Before coming to the city, Gabby sent me images of ring designs she liked and told me she wanted an emerald, her birthstone. I explained that emeralds vary in color and quality, and it would be best for her to see them in person. The region where the emerald is sourced can greatly affect its color.

Gabby booked her flight, and I started reaching out to my contacts in the Diamond District to find the perfect gemstone. Once she arrived, I took her and her family to several gem dealers to view different emeralds, considering various sizes, shapes and colors. After exploring the options, Gabby chose a Zambian emerald for its vibrant, effervescent, glowing color.

Next, I introduced her to my trusted head of production. Before the meeting, we chose several settings for her to try on. With my production team’s guidance, Gabby tried on different settings, had her finger sized, and gave her input on the design. She ultimately chose a two-tone setting, with yellow gold to complement her skin tone and white gold to highlight the diamonds.

By the end of the day, we had all the details needed to create her custom ring. The estimated timeline was six weeks, but we completed it even faster.

Gabby didn’t see the final product until her boyfriend (now fiancée) proposed. She absolutely loves the ring, and I’m thrilled for them both.

TIP: When designing or purchasing fine jewelry with colored gemstones, it is vital to see the gems in person first. Pictures don’t always do colored gemstones justice.
